What could've been and what really became a journey into the surfing and skateboarding world, told by a young man whose older brother would amaze all that would witness the acrobatics that would change surfing and skateboarding. History began it’s journey in a small town that was famous for fishing and where surfing started, where even the three Princes from Hawaii would come to visit this place. Santa Cruz, a small tourist town in the center of California. Northern California where we called Central California. Where no one could imagine the events that would occur in such a small town but amazingly the creation of so many things would evolve from this tale. The escapades of these two brothers would bring a whole town and a community together to invent things that had never been invented before. These two blue-eyed and blonde haired boys left with no devices but the ocean and the need to experiment with speed and acceleration. While the older brother would take to the sea and do things that had never been seen before, the younger brother would sit and admire all that he saw which would motivate him to the land and bring forth an evolutionary time were most in this country thought that skateboarding was something for those daredevils who are willing to take their lives into their own hands. This story is the tale of drugs, violence and mayhem, corruption and collusion from all aspects of our government and community. While some might say we had an urge to do things others thought were crazy, we believed them to be an expression of who we were and what we believed in. As my brother and I would launch a new era into the skateboarding world that no one had ever done or seen before for we had no examples and no one to follow. All that we were creating was our own and no one else's for in the beginning we were not only the Masters but we are also the teachers and the students. This story has no boundaries for the individuals that took place in this story that is a true story, there are no innocent people in this story as there are no innocent people walking the face of this earth. Let all know that read this story and those involved will be riddled with guilt for their own excuse will be nothing more than an empty apology or anger and frustration. As I would witness so many admirers I would see so many more who were more involved in themselves, no different than my own brother. I found myself compelled in my older years to write this book, for no one knows the tale of the Santa Cruz crew like I do. So many young skateboarders during the evolution of skateboarding with no clue on anybody else in the world, whether they were in Australia, Japan or the East Coast of America, from Florida to New Jersey and of course Southern California. Trapped in our own world we would change the history of skateboarding forever in our own way. The word was out quickly that my brother Kevin Reed was doing things on a surfboard that no other people were doing which brought forth photographers from all around and they would follow my brother like little puppy dogs, worshiping a young kid who do things they'd never seen before. This would translate from the ocean to the land and one day the older brother would find himself admiring the younger brother and began to conquer a sport that had not even become a sport yet. Thank God for surfing and skateboarding for it was our salvation during this era. Read more
